Define Roles and Readiness Before the Call

Identify the site electrician, mechanical installer, operator and supplier technician. Confirm language, time zone and communication channel. Before booking live support, the site should provide photographs of placement, levelling points, supply terminals, protective earth, extraction, air and cooling. The supplier should confirm the software, connection method and documents required. A readiness checklist prevents an expensive call from being consumed by missing cables, unavailable tools or an electrical condition that should have been resolved locally.

Commissioning Evidence That Must Be Recorded

Use labelled values and files so that remote staff can verify conditions without guessing from a small camera image:

  • Supply voltage, phase sequence, protective-earth checks and control-voltage readings.
  • Machine level, axis freedom, lubrication delivery and restraint-removal confirmation.
  • Controller, drive and inverter model numbers with parameter and program backups.
  • Homing repeatability, travel limits, spindle direction and emergency-stop response.
  • First-part dimensions, diagonals, surface condition, tool data and test-program revision.

A useful measurement record states the instrument, measurement point, machine condition and acceptance limit. A number without those four details is difficult to compare, repeat or use in a purchase decision.

Release the Machine Through Commissioning Gates

Each gate should be signed off before the next introduces energy or motion:

  1. Approve installation readiness and isolated electrical inspection.
  2. Energise controls, capture alarms and save the as-delivered parameter state.
  3. Test lubrication, inputs, safety chain and low-speed axis movement.
  4. Verify homing, limits, spindle, auxiliaries and dry-run the approved program.
  5. Cut the first part, record measurements and authorise production only after deviations close.

Do not change several variables at once. Record the baseline, make one controlled change and repeat the same test. This approach separates a real improvement from a temporary result caused by material, temperature, tooling or operator variation.

Protect the Baseline While Solving Problems

Remote troubleshooting often encourages rapid parameter changes. Save the original file and record every change, owner and result. Do not send an entire unknown parameter set when one verified value can be changed. If mechanical resistance exists, increasing motor current or gain can hide the cause and create damage. Establish rollback points after control power, axis motion and cutting acceptance. The final approved backup should be clearly named and stored both at the workshop and with the supplier.

When Remote Commissioning Must Stop

Stop if protective earth is unverified, phase or voltage is uncertain, a restraint remains installed, an axis binds, lubrication does not reach the guides, safety inputs are bypassed or unexpected movement occurs. Remote support cannot replace a competent person at the machine. Another stop condition is missing visual access: if the supplier cannot identify the terminal, indicator or moving area, the site should provide better evidence before proceeding. Production deadlines never justify defeating a safety function.

Designing Support Across Borders and Time Zones

International buyers should agree support hours, escalation route, remote-access method and language before purchase. Low-bandwidth sites may need short pre-recorded clips and exported log files rather than continuous video. Store drawings locally so work can continue during an internet interruption. A clear spare-parts list and courier plan should accompany the commissioning pack. This preparation is particularly valuable where local CNC specialists are scarce or travel visas and flights delay on-site assistance.

Documentation That Protects the Investment

The final commissioning dossier should contain the readiness checklist, signed electrical values, photographs, parameter backups, alarm log, test program, first-part report, open-item list and training record. Use consistent filenames with date and machine serial number. This becomes the reference for warranty support and future maintenance.

Keep the quotation, approved configuration, electrical drawings, parameter backup, inspection results, serial numbers, consumable list and service contacts in one controlled folder. Photographs should show scale and location; videos should include the machine state and test conditions. This evidence shortens remote diagnosis and prevents a later disagreement about what was supplied, measured or changed.

Can remote commissioning replace a local electrician?

No. A competent local person must verify and perform electrical work under applicable rules. Remote supplier guidance can clarify the machine’s requirements and sequence, but it cannot physically inspect every connection or assume local legal responsibility.

Which backup should be saved first?

Save the as-delivered controller, drive and inverter state before changes, then create dated backups after each approved milestone. The final production backup should not overwrite the original. Clear naming allows a technician to return to a known state during later diagnosis.
